Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of arenediazonium salts with arylsilanes and aryltrifluoroborates in water

Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of various arenediazonium salts with ArSi(OR)₃ and KArBF₃ have been achieved in good to excellent yields under simple aerobic conditions in water at room temperature. The functional group tolerance makes these transformations as attractive alternatives to the traditional cross-coupling approaches. Furthermore, the sequence can also be performed in a one-pot domino process, omitting the isolation of the intermediate arenediazonium salt.

Synthesis and mesomorphic properties of novel high birefringence azobenzene liquid crystals with lateral fluorosubstituent

In order to obtain liquid crystals with high birefringence (Δn), four azobenzene compounds based on lateral fluorinated bistolane moieties with trifluoromethyl terminal groups were synthesized with Hagihara–Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The molecular structures of the compounds were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, ¹H-nuclear magnetic resonance. The transition temperatures, optical textures, and optical anisotropies were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy. The effect of the alkyl substituents on liquid crystal behavior is discussed in detail. The compounds have showed higher birefringence values.     

Flexural contact in MEMS stiction

Adhesive force between two solid surfaces can lead to stiction failure of the micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) device. The competition between the adhesive force and the beam restoring force determines whether the stiction occurs or not. Previous models assume that the stuck beam deforms either as the arc-shape or the S-shape, which causes significant differences in the measurements of adhesion and disputations among researchers. The contact mechanics model presented in this paper shows that the assumptions of the arc-shape and S-shape on the beam deformation over-simplify the problem; both the arc-shaped deformation and S-shaped deformation significantly deviate from the real ones. The previous theories are shown to be incompatible with the recent experimental results. The model presented in this paper attempts to explain those new experimental results and resolve some disputations on the previous models. The instabilities of jump-in during loading process and jump-off during unloading process are also incorporated in this model.     

License plate location based on trichromatic imaging and color-discrete characteristic

License plate location (LPL) is the key part of automatic license plate recognition (LPR) system that plays an important role in many applications and a number of LPL methods based on color information have been proposed. However, some problems, such as country specific, similar color interference, lighting variation sensitive, time consuming, processing only one kind of LP with same color combination a time and omitting the case of more than one combinations in a LP, should be solved further. In this study, a color-based LPL method that consists of three modules: color edge extraction, denoising and searching, is proposed. Color edge extraction, the kernel of the proposed, is designed by color-discrete characteristics of license plates in the trichromatic wavebands. In the experiment, 1384 images taken from natural scenes in China and other 104 countries or regions are employed. Of which, 74 have been failed to locate the license plates. The success rate and average execution time are 94.7% and 57 ms, respectively.     

Observation of capillary discharge Ne-like Ar 46.9?nm laser with pre-pulse and main-pulse delay time in the domain of 2–130?μs

We demonstrated the lasing of Ne-like Ar 46.9?nm pumped by capillary discharge with the delay time between pre-pulse and main-pulse ranging from 2 to 130???s. Results show that the laser output reduced significantly when the delay time is much longer than 12???s. The temporal evolution of spontaneous radiation emitted from pre-ionized plasma implies that the observed reduction of the laser output is caused by the axial non-uniformity of pre-ionized plasma density and the decrease of pre-ionized plasma density.
